Liver health and weight

Let’s learn to be kind to your body, starting with your liver. Extra weight will come off on its own. Knee pain will ease on its own. The body knows how to heal when we stop working against it.

“

“You can activate your body's natural weight-loss switch by following these five simple steps—a switch that depends on the health of your liver."

Dr. Takeshi Kurihara, Tokyo, Japan

His clinic specializes in treating liver diseases such as fatty liver, chronic hepatitis C, and chronic hepatitis B, as well as diabetes, dyslipidemia (cholesterol and triglycerides), and the rapidly increasing condition of obesity.

“

“Losing weight too quickly is hard on your body and can cause the weight to come right back. A healthy goal is to lose no more than 3% of your body weight in a month. Patients who achieve a 4-pound weight loss in the first month typically go on to achieve an 11-pound loss by the end of the third month"

Try this!

Rule #1

Weigh yourself once a day and keep a record. This simple habit builds self-awareness and makes your weight-loss efforts much more effective.

Rule #2

Stop drinking sugary beverages. Drinks like soda and sweetened coffee are a major driver of fat accumulation in the liver. Switch to water, tea, or black coffee to give your liver a chance to slim down

Rule #3

Eat more vegetables. Aim for about 12 oz (2½ cups) of vegetables per day—roughly two cupped handfuls, or twice what you usually eat. The fiber keeps you satisfied and helps tame your appetite.

Rule #4

Cut back on carbs. Aim for 70–130 g of carbohydrates per day in total—about 40 g per meal. For comparison, one slice of bread contains about 15 g of carbs, and a cup of cooked rice about 45 g.

Rule #5

Cut back on processed foods. They contain many additives that the liver has to work overtime to detoxify—leaving it no chance to rest and recover.
